Gail Hammer lives in Toronto with her husband and a black German Shepherd (who has been used as the model in many practice shoots - she has a son and a daughter who have been used for test shots as well). Gail rides horses and then photographs them, sometimes while still sitting in the saddle.
Gail has been a photographer for over 25 years. She graduated from Ryerson University with a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Photographic Arts and recently completed her Master of Fine Arts in Documentary Media. In 1992 she became involved with Inglenook Community High School and taught creative photography workshops over a period of 12 years. These ranged from basic darkroom skills to more creative ventures such as hand colouring, pinhole camera photography, and Polaroid transfers and emulsion lifts. Gail does hand colored portraiture in the traditional manner beginning with black and white film, processing in the darkroom and hand colouring the photograph with oils and pencils. At the opposite end of the spectrum she photographs horses and landscapes with a digital infrared camera. Gail specializes in wedding and environmental portraiture using a natural and easy going style. "Not surprisingly, many people are uncomfortable being photographed - they feel shy and self-conscious. I encourage people to be photographed in a location that is meaningful to them and to even bring a favourite possession to have with them in the photograph. Doing so not only helps them enjoy the session, but also adds a nostalgic touch. The best thing about a photograph is the meaning and memories attached to that particular time in your life."
